 e Community Parkstad warmly invite researchers\, educators\, students\, an
d anyone curious about Open Science to sign up for the Open Science Festiv
al Limburg 2026. The festival takes place on 11 and 12 June 2026 and will
bring our community together across two locations with activities in Heerl
en (11 June) and Maastricht (12 June). Over two inspiring days\, we’ll e
xplore the theme of interdisciplinarity. Participants can look forward to
 workshops\, keynote presentations\, interactive sessions\, and opportuniti
es to connect with colleagues from both within and beyond the Open Science
Community. Whether you’re looking to gain new insights\, share your exp
eriences\, or simply connect with others who are passionate about Open Sci
ence\, there will be plenty of opportunities to engage and exchange ideas.
Register now for the Open Science Festival Limburg!\n\nMore information a

join the festival? Open Science is about making research more open\, tra
nsparent\, and collaborative by encouraging the sharing of results\, data\
, and methods. It creates space for stronger interdisciplinary collaborati
on and fosters meaningful connections with society. For researchers\, this
means greater visibility\, improved reproducibility\, and new opportuniti
es for collaboration. Educators benefit from access to open educational re
sources\, while policymakers and the wider public gain better access to kn
owledge\, enabling more informed decision-making and greater societal impa
ct. The festival’s focus on interdisciplinarity brings these values to l
ife by connecting people from different fields\, backgrounds\, and perspec
tives. It’s a chance to learn from one another\, spark new ideas\, and b
uild collaborations that go beyond disciplinary boundaries. For questions

SUMMARY:Pre-registration workshop: Why\, How\, and Where
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Open Science and Pre-Registration UM is on a mi

 s to make research\, including papers\, data\, methods\, etc.\, open to an
yone so we can all benefit. With this workshop\, we aim to introduce to yo
u one of the most important steps to making science more open\, namely pre
-registration. Pre-registration is also a key part of UM’s Open Science
as well as Recognition &amp\; Rewards policies and programs. This workshop
will not only teach participants how pre-registration applies to their fi
eld of study but will also include some hands-on practical examples of how
to pre-register research. In the final part\, we will conclude brief Q&am
p\;A on the advantages and challenges of pre-registration. With this and m
any other events\, the Open Science Community of UM (OSCM) will help you d
iscover open science topics more deeply so that you can apply Open Science
and FAIR principles to your research and data.\n\nWorkshop – Pre-regist
ration: Why\, How\, and Where? A particularly important step to making sci
ence more open is pre-registration\, meaning openly pre-specifying design\

tration as one of the key areas that faculties will need to improve and de
velop. Thus\, pre-registration will become more important for UM researche
rs in terms of the Recognition and Rewards program. This workshop will pro
vide hands-on advice and practical illustrations of why\, how\, and where
scientists should pre-register their studies. Furthermore\, it will includ
e exercises for pre-registering participants’ (hypothetical) studies at
osf.io and aspredicted.org. The event will then close with Q&amp\;A that w
ill discuss the advantages and challenges associated with pre-registration
across diverse fields and disciplines.\n\nThe workshop will be taking pla
ce on Monday\, December 15th\, 2025\, from 14.00 to 15.45 hrs at Tongerses
traat 53 room A.023 . This session will be hosted by OSCM member Roman Br

SUMMARY:Citizen Science Matchmaking event - Connecting citizens and science
DESCRIPTION:Citizens in Limburg are invited to contribute to ongoing resear
ch at a unique event hosted by Maastricht University Library. The Citizen
Science Matchmaking Event will take place on Monday 15 December 2025\, fro
m 13:30 to 17:00\, at the Theater aan het Vrijthof\, Ferdinand Duynstee Fo
yer.\nAbout the event\nSupported by a grant from the Dutch Research Counci
l (NWO)\, the event focuses on Open Science. Citizen science is a key aspe
ct of this approach\, allowing members of the public to actively engage wi
th research and make scientific knowledge more accessible to everyone.\n\n
The event combines a science fair with a ‘speed-dating’ format\, desig
ned to connect citizen volunteers with researchers from a variety of acade
mic and knowledge institutions in the region. At their stands\, researcher
s will present ongoing projects and include an interactive citizen science
element\, giving visitors the opportunity to participate in a hands-on re
search activity. A few projects participating in the event:\n\n Developin
 g AI for parents of school-age children\n A Maastricht history bring-your
-own photo-and-story clinic\n An app for managing chronic pain using AI\n
The online platform Ons Limburgs Museum\n A financial literacy workshop
 \n A bring-your-own-research-question workshop from Burgerkracht Limburg\
 n\nRead more about all participating projects.\nWhy participate?\nCitizen
Science allows members of the public to engage directly in research\, from
formulating questions to collecting and analysing data\, and contributing
to solutions. Participation not only provides insight into scientific pro
cesses but also helps generate knowledge that is relevant and reusable. It
fosters scientific understanding and trust\, which is especially importan
t in today’s society. Participation in this event is free of charge. Eve
ryone is welcome to participate in this event\, especially citizen volunte
ers.\n\nFor information and registration you can go to the UM Library webs
 ite\, click here

SUMMARY:Pre-registration workshop: Why\, How\, and Where
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Open Science and Pre-Registration\nUM is on a m
ission to become a leading example of the Open Science movement\, which ai
 ms to make research\, including papers\, data\, methods\, etc.\, open to a
nyone so we can all benefit.\n\nWith this workshop\, we aim to introduce t
o you one of the most important steps to making science more open\, namely
pre-registration. Pre-registration is also a key part of UM’s Open Scie
nce as well as Recognition &amp\; Rewards policies and programs.\n\nThis w
orkshop will not only teach participants how pre-registration applies to t
heir field of study but will also include some hands-on practical examples
of how to pre-register research. In the final part\, we will conclude wit
h a panel of international experts on the advantages and challenges of pre
-registration (especially across disciplines).\n\nWith this and many other
events\, the Open Science Community of UM (OSCM) will help you discover o
pen science topics more deeply so that you can apply Open Science and FAIR
  principles to your research and data.\n\nWorkshop – Pre-registration: W
hy\, How\, and Where?\nA particularly important step to making science mor
 e open is pre-registration\, meaning openly pre-specifying design\, sample
size\, hypotheses\, and/or planned analyses of a study or data before dat
a collection. Pre-registration is considered a particularly relevant tool
to increase trust in science and provide more robust and replicable scient
ific findings. Acknowledging its usefulness\, more and more journals\, fun
ders\, and universities make pre-registration a requirement or evaluation
criterion for hiring or promotion. Moreover\, UM has put pre-registration
as one of the key areas that faculties will need to improve and develop. T
hus\, pre-registration will become more important for UM researchers in te
rms of the Recognition and Rewards program.\n\nThis hybrid workshop (in pe
rson and online via Zoom) will provide hands-on advice and practical illus
trations of why\, how\, and where scientists should pre-register their stu
dies. Furthermore\, it will include exercises for pre-registering particip
ants’ (hypothetical) studies at osf.io and aspredicted.org. The event wi
ll then close with an international expert panel that will discuss the adv
antages and challenges associated with pre-registration in diverse fields
and disciplines (e.g.\, “soft vs. hard” sciences\, quantitative or qua
litative research\, micro or macro research).\nThe workshop will be taking
place on Wednesday\, November 8\, 2023\, from 14.00 to 16.00 hrs at Tonge
rsestraat 53\, room A0.24.  Since physical seats are limited\, the first
35 participants that indicate they will attend physically can join in pers
on. Others can of course still join online.\n\nThis session will be hosted
by OSCM member Roman Briker (OSE) and will include an international exper
t panel involving:\n\n Tamarinde Haven (Tilburg University)\n Stefan Ros
e (Bern University of Applied Sciences)\n\nThe workshop program is as foll
 ows:\n\n\n\n14.00 – 14.30\nIntroduction – An introduction to the neces
 sity and facets of pre-registration\nBy Roman Briker\n\n\n14.30 – 15.15\
nPractice – Practical illustrations of pre-registration\nBy Roman Briker
 \n\n\n15.15 – 16.00\nExpert panel – Advantages and challenges of pre-r
egistration in different fields (including qualitative research\, archival
data\, micro- and macro-research\, etc.)\nBy Tamarinde Haven and Stefan R
ose\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nParticipation is free\, but please register so we ca
n keep you up to date on the event. Registration deadline is November 1st.

SUMMARY:Mini-workshop on Open Science and Pre-Registration
DESCRIPTION:Interdisciplinary UM-BIC mini-workshop on Open Science\n\nOn Th
 ursday\, October 20\, 2022\, from 12:00-13:00h\, Roman Briker\, SBE’s Op
en Science ambassador\, will be the speaker in the Interdisciplinary Brown
bag Seminar (room A0.24\, Tongersestraat 53). Directly afterward (13:00-14
:00)\, you are invited to stay for a 1h mini-workshop on how to put Open S
cience into practice in your own work. The goal of this workshop simply is
to share as much information about\, and experiences with\, the tools and
platforms available for preregistrations\, data and code sharing\, prepri
nt publication\, etc. Thus\, we start with Roman’s talk:\n\n“A replica
tion crisis in the behavioral and social sciences: Open Science as a crusa
der for a brighter future”\n\nAbstract: In the early 2010s\, a large cri
sis shocked the scientific community\, the media\, and the public: Promine
nt researchers admitted to faking their data\, others published findings t
hat are physically impossible (“Feeling the future”)\, and large-scale
research projects revealed that most findings in psychology and the broad
er social and behavioral sciences could not be replicated. Given that the
relevance and utility of science critically hinge on the trustworthiness o
f its findings\, these developments constitute a huge burden for scientist
s and for stakeholders aiming to apply scientific knowledge. I will discus
s the reasons and processes that led to this so-called replication crisis
and showcase the Open Science movement as a pathway to more trustworthy re
search.\n\nThroughout Roman’s talk\, we will already have the opportunit
y to interactively discuss Open Science measures and their relevance for u
s as scientists and the academy more broadly. In the subsequent mini-works
hop\, we will then discuss how to put them into practice most effectively.
\n\nRegistration is not necessary\, you can just walk in and join!\n\nWe l
ook forward to lively and informative exchanges with you!

SUMMARY:ReproducibiliTea - Replication research
DESCRIPTION:During ReproducibiliTea meetings we examine topics related to r
 eproducibility\, open science\, research quality\, and good/bad research p
ractices. ReproducibiliTea started in 2018 at the University of Oxford\, a
nd has now spread to 140 institutions in 27 different countries. There cur
rently are ReproducibiliTea journal club meetings organized at 7 different
universities in the Netherlands. For more information please check: https

al club is organized in collaboration with the Open Science Community Maas
tricht (OSCM)\, for more information and other events\, please check the e
vents page.\n\nJoin our next Maastricht ReproducibiliTea (zoom) meeting on
Thursday 30th of June from 11.00-12.00!\n\nDuring ReproducibiliTea meetin
gs we examine topics related to reproducibility\, open science\, and resea
rch quality. For this meeting we will discuss the use of replication resea
rch for student projects. Replication research has become increasingly mai
nstream over the last decade\, with many journals now accepting (direct) r
eplications of previous research. Still\, students are often required to p
erform original research for their thesis\, specifically excluding replica
tion research. Is this desirable\, or can replication research be a rich l
earning experience for students?\n\nDr Ewout Meijer will introduce this to
pic and the discussion. We would like to hear your ideas about this\, what
is currently done at UM\, what and how could it change\, and what do you
think is needed to ensure the student learning experience.\n\nWe will disc
uss the article ‘Publishing Research With Undergraduate Students via Rep
lication Work: The Collaborative Replications and Education Project’. Wh
ich can be found in the following link: https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2019

 .05 – Short presentation to summarize the article\n- 11.20 – Discussio
n\n- 11.50 – Closing statement\n\nYou can register on the right. Partici

SUMMARY:FAIR for Qualitative Data course
DESCRIPTION:FAIR for Qualitative Data is a course for researchers working w
ith qualitative research material and willing to explore how FAIR (Findabl
e\, Accessible\, Interoperable\, Reusable) could fit their work. The cours
e will be informative but also hands-on and practice-based.\n\nThe course
covers the basics of FAIR practices and helps qualitative researchers deci
de how the FAIR principles could be applied to their work. The course is a
co-constructive exercise\, so your work and active participation will be
key to keep designing the course.\n\nLearning objectives:\n\n Theoretical
ly discuss FAIR and its possible limits for non-readable machine research
data.\n In breakout rooms look into FAIR repositories with qualitative da
ta and constructively be critical to the researcher’s approaches in term
s of becoming findable and accessible.\n We will use a real case scenario
to explore how inter-operability and re-usability can become useful aids
while working with teams of qualitative researchers.\n\nTarget group: Rese
archers at Maastricht University Working with Qualitative Data\n\nLanguage
 : English\n\nPre-requisites: Researcher at Maastricht University\, Advance
d English C2 level\n\nMaximum number of participants: 15\n\nYou can regist

SUMMARY:FAIR Essentials workshop
DESCRIPTION:The FAIR Essentials workshop focuses on teaching you what FAIR
is and how to apply it to your research. The workshop will use a Problem B
ased Learning (PBL) approach: we will build both a collective discussion o
f what is actually FAIR and what it means to different disciplines. We wil
l then integrate what we have learned collectively by making FAIR exercise
s in break-out room sessions.\n\nThe participants will have a tutor availa
ble to answer questions about the exercises. However\, it is up to the gro
up to solve the exercises. At the end we will build a collective road-map
of FAIR points in a plenary session.\n\nLearning objectives:\n\n Get basi
c theoretical knowledge about what is FAIR and how and if it could be appl
ied to all scientific disciplines.\n Articulate benefits\, barriers and c
hallenges in making data and other outputs FAIR.\n Learn collectively thr
ough independent hands-on experience with techniques\, services and techno
logies to make your data FAIR or help others make their data FAIR.\n Toge
ther come up with a collective road-map of ideas on what it means to "be F

SUMMARY:Workshop on Pre-Registration: Why\, How\, and Where?
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Open Science and Pre-registration\nUM is on a m
ission to become a leading example of the Open Science movement\, which ai
 ms to make research\, including papers\, data\, methods\, etc.\, open to a
nyone so we can all benefit.\n\nWith this workshop\, we aim to introduce t
o you one of the most important steps to making science more open\, namely
pre-registration. This workshop will not only teach participants how pre-
registration is applicable to your study field\, but will also include som
e hands-on practical examples on how to pre-register your research. In the
final part\, we will conclude with a panel of international experts on th
e advantages and challenges of pre-registration.\n\nWith this and many oth
er events\, the Open Science Community of UM (OSCM) will help you discover
open science topics more deeply so that you can apply Open Science and FA
IR principles to your research and data.\n\nWorkshop – Pre-registration:
Why\, How\, and Where?\nA particularly important step to making science m
ore open is pre-registration\, meaning openly pre-specifying design\, samp
le size\, hypotheses\, and/or planned analyses of a study or data before d
ata collection. Pre-registration is considered a particularly relevant too
l to increase trust in science and provide more robust and replicable scie
ntific findings. Acknowledging its usefulness\, more and more journals\, f
unders\, and universities make pre-registration a requirement or evaluatio
n criterion for hiring or promotion.\n\nThis online (via Zoom) workshop wi
ll provide hands-on advice and practical illustrations of why\, how\, and
where scientists should pre-register their studies. Furthermore\, it will
include exercises of pre-registering participants’ (hypothetical) studie
s at osf.io and aspredicted.org. The event will then close with an interna
tional expert panel that will discuss the advantages and challenges associ
ated with pre-registration in diverse fields and disciplines (e.g.\, “so
ft vs. hard” sciences\, quantitative or qualitative research\, micro or
macro research).\nThe workshop will be taking place on Wednesday December
 1\, 2021 from 14.00 to 16.00 hrs.\n\nThis session will be hosted by OSCM m
embers Roman Briker (OSE) and Jerry Spanakis (DKE) and will include an int
ernational expert panel involving:\n\n George Banks (UNC Charlotte)\n Ri
ma-Maria Rahal (Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods Bonn
 )\n Emiel van Miltenburg (Tilburg University)\n\nThe workshop program\, o
 n Wednesday December 1\, is as follows:\n\n\n\n14.00 – 14.30\n\n&nbsp\;\
nIntroduction - An introduction into the necessity and facets of pre-regis
 tration\nBy Roman Briker\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\n14.30 – 15.15\n\n&nbsp\;\nPract
ice - Practical illustrations of pre-registration in breakout rooms\nBy Ro
 man Briker\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\n15.15 – 16.00\nExpert panel – Advantages an
 d challenges of pre-registration\nBy George Banks\, Rima-Maria Rahal\, and
Emiel van Miltenburg\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nParticipation is free\, but please
register so we can send you the Zoom link and keep you up to date for the
  event.

AIR". This last objective will also be used to keep building and improving
the course in the future.\n\nTarget group: Researchers of alle levels at
Maastricht University\n\nLanguage: English\n\nMaximum number of participan
ts: 15\n\nYou can register for the event here.
