I am a Principal Investigator at the Brightlands Future Farming Institute (BFFI), Maastricht University, where I lead the Integrative Bioinformatics Lab within the Plant Functional Genomics group. My research lies at the intersection of bioinformatics, systems biology, multi-omics, artificial intelligence, and plant science, with a particular focus on developing computational approaches to understand complex biological systems. My group develops and applies methods for integrating genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and other omics data to investigate gene function, metabolic pathways, and the molecular mechanisms underlying plant traits. A major focus of my research is the discovery of genes and enzymes involved in specialised metabolism and the reconstruction of biosynthetic pathways. Beyond multi-omics integration, my research explores knowledge graphs, natural language processing, large language models, and AI-assisted knowledge discovery to connect information from scientific literature with experimental biological data. My lab is particularly interested in developing computational resources that make complex biological information more accessible, interoperable, and useful for hypothesis generation. I also coordinate the Plant Open Datahub project funded by NWO Open Science NL infrastructure funding. Through interdisciplinary collaborations with experimental biologists, computational scientists, and researchers in agriculture and biotechnology, I aim to bridge the gap between data-driven discovery and experimental plant biology, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of plant metabolism, function, and adaptation.
